Genetic Services in Victoria
The advances in human genetics over the past twenty years have revolutionised knowledge of the role of inheritance in health and disease. We now know that our DNA can not only cause single-gene disorders (e.g. Down Syndrome, Fragile X, Phenylketonuria), but also predispose us to cancer, heart disease, psychiatric disorders and even to some infectious diseases.
The Department of Health provides funding and support for public general reproductive, paediatric and adult genetic and heritable cancer services in Victoria. These services provide high quality integrated diagnosis, clinical care, counselling, screening, predictive testing, education and professional training to assist individuals, couples and families to make informed lifestyle choices.
Private genetic services are available through some Victorian hospitals and companies. A limited number of services are eligible for rebates under the Commonwealth Medical Benefits Scheme. Other services are available on a user pays basis.
