Non-potable water in food businesses

The reasons why the water supply to a food business may not be safe may be due to either a temporary interruption to the safety of the reticulated drinking water supply or the source of water is not from an adequately treated drinking water supply. The following guidelines provide information to assist food businesses to ensure that their water supply is safe for food preparation and human consumption.

Health of Food Handlers - Food Standards Code

Food may be contaminated by those handling it and so particular care must be taken by both employers and employees to ensure that no illness is passed on by those working in the industry. These documents from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (formerly ANZFA) explain the requirements for Food handers and Businesses.

Guide to the Labelling of Packaged Foods

Labelling requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards (FSANZ) Code has been adopted into Food Law by all States and Territories. FSANZ has provided an ingredient labelling fact sheet. For has more information see the Food Standards Australia New Zealand website.

The South Australian Department of Human Services has also developed a fact sheet providing information titled 'Guide to the Labelling of packaged food for retail sale'.

Home delivery guide

Many members of the community take advantage of home delivery by supermarkets and other retail food businesses. This service is a major assistance to the aged, infirm, and disabled, and anyone else who finds it difficult to take food items home with them at the time of purchase.

So long as food items can be delivered safely, home delivery is a desirable arrangement and a very helpful community service.

The purpose of this guideline is to provide advice to those involved in home delivery of perishable food, other than ready-to-eat meals, using un-refrigerated transport vehicles.
