Applications for appointment to Victorian Food Safety CouncilPage contents: Overview | Download documents OverviewThe Food Safety Council is appointed by the Minister for Health under Part 10 of the Food Act 1984. The functions of the Council are to advise the Minister on any matter referred to it by the Minister. Among those matters are:
The last appointment of the whole Council was in January 2007 for the 3 year period ending 31 December 2009. There are 12 members appointed to the Council. The range of expertise is microbiology, nutrition, food technology, other relevant scientific expertise, law and retail/food service There is currently a vacancy caused through the resignation of a scientific member (microbiological/food technology/scientific). The present activity is to find a replacement for this member. The appointment is for the remainder of the period ending 31 December 2009. The Food Safety Council meets 6 times a year. The Food Standards sub-committee of the Council may meet 3 or 4 times a year to consider specific applications and proposals to amend the Australian Food Standards Code. The person appointed to fill the present vacancy will have a prominent role with the Food Standards sub-committee, and the evaluation of proposals to amend compositional food standards.
