About templates

All food businesses registered with Municipal Councils are required to submit a Food Safety Program when first registering the premises and on each annual registration date.

Food businesses may choose to develop their own independent Food Safety Program which will have to be audited by a certified Food Safety Auditor. Alternatively, food businesses can elect to use a standard Food Safety Program Template that has been registered with the Department of Human Services.

Templates are an easy way to write a Food Safety Program. A template is a simple document that describes a standard approach and the steps required to ensure that food that is sold is safe to eat. A template may be designed to be used by many different types of businesses, or it could be designed specially for one type of business. Using a registered template may be cheaper, quicker and simpler than employing someone to write a Food Safety Program for the business.

Class 2 food businesses using a registered template can choose to have their Food Safety Program audited by a certified Food Safety Auditor or have the Food Safety Program compliance-checked by the local Municipal Council. Class 1 food businesses, and Class 2 businesses with their own independent Food Safety Program, need to have the Food Safety Program audited by a certified Food Safety Auditor.
