Online Forms website: Ethics & Research Governance

Page content: Overview | Separation of ethics and research governance (Site Specific Assessment) processes | Download documents

Overview

There are two ways to complete the National Ethics Application Form (NEAF) and you must use the appropriate website for your organisation.

Hospitals that are participating in the streamlined system, listed with the Consultative Council under Participating Organisations Contact Details must use the Online Forms (NEAF) website.

Other organisations, must use the NHMRC NEAF website.

Separation of ethics and research governance (Site Specific Assessment) processes

As part of the Victorian Government's initiative to streamline ethical review participating hospitals and their HRECs now separate ethics review requirements from research governance.

The National Ethics Application Form (NEAF) and the Victorian Specific Module are used for ethical review.

The research governance form on the Online Forms website is generated when a 'new application' is created. This form is called the Site Specific Assessment Form (SSA) and is submitted to the Investigator's site Research Governance Officer (or equivalent administrator). This must be submitted as soon as possible when the ethics application is submitted to the HREC.

There are two requirements for commencement of a human research project:

  • HREC approval
  • Site specific assessment authorisation (research governance authorisation for the site to conduct the study)

Checklists for ethics and research governance submissions have been developed and are designed to be submitted with every application to guide the Investigator and assist the HREC Coordinator and Research Governance Officer. The checklists can be accessed below.
