Overview

Streamlining requests for a client service between agencies within the Victorian Department of Human Services (DHS) and in the broader community is increasingly becoming a priority for a broad range of care providers seeking to improve client care coordination. Information technology is seen as a key enabler for this vision and much work has already been done towards an electronic version of the referral process.

Agencies and partnerships have been developing ways to share information electronically to improve the efficiency and security of information exchange particularly for the purpose of client referral. As activity in this space grows the challenges associated with interoperability and the development of a standards based approach are becoming more critical. The Victorian Department of Human Services ICT Strategy Council has recognised this as an important strategic goal and in response has commissioned this project.

The expected outcome of the project is the analysis and design of an electronic referral capability that can be used by any party that is interested in communicating with any other party engaged in the care of clients in Victoria.
