Introduction
One of the key drivers for the development of the state’s drinking water quality regulatory framework is recognition of the importance of safe drinking water to the ongoing social and economic wellbeing of Victorians.
The regulatory framework is detailed in the Safe Drinking Water Act 2003 and Safe Drinking Water Regulations 2005. Section 32 of the Act requires the Secretary to the Department of Health to provide the Minister for Health with an annual report of drinking water quality in Victoria.
This report is the sixth annual report on the quality of drinking water in Victoria produced under this legislation, and it covers the period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010.
The annual report provides an overview of the operations and implementation of the Act and the performance of water businesses in respect to the Act for the 2009-10 year. The report also includes a statewide perspective of drinking water quality, a summary of implementation activities, and summaries of the performance of the regulated water businesses in respect to the draft drinking water quality standards and water quality incidents.
