Use licence

Overview

These licences authorise the holder to use specified types of radiation sources for a specified purpose. The licences are issued for periods of one, two or three years. There are prescribed fees for licences which consist of an application fee and a licence fee. Licence fees vary depending on the length of the licence.

A use licence issued by the Department consists of:

  • a title/cover page
  • a Schedule which as a minimum describes the type of radiation source and the purpose for which it is authorised. The Schedule contains the conditions which have been placed on the licence.

How do I apply for a use licence?

You need to complete an application form and forward to the department. Most Applications are assessed by the department and a decision made on issue of a licence within approximately 2 weeks of lodgement.  You will be mailed an invoice once your application has been assessed.  You must pay this invoice, and once the final approval has been given you will be sent a certificate.  Until you receive this certificate you are not authorised to use radiation sources.

Variations to an existing use licence

From time to time a use licence holder may wish to make changes to their licence to vary the scope including such matters as the types of radiation sources or the way in which they wish to use the sources. In these cases the use licence holder must apply to the department for a variation to the use licence. The application form varies depending on the sector and nature of the radiation practice involved that must be lodged with the department.

Most applications are assessed by the department and a decision made on issue of a licence within approximately 2 weeks of lodgement.

The licence must be varied by the Department before the proposed changes to the radiation practice take effect. This means that for example it is an offence against the Radiation Act for a use licence holder to use a radiation source which is not authorised by their licence. Similarly, it is an offence to use it in a manner that is not authorised by their licence. If you have any questions about variations, please contact the Radiation Safety Hotline.
