Overview

These authorities authorise the holder to test specified types of prescribed radiation sources against radiation safety standards and issue certificates of compliance. There are prescribed fees for these authorities which consist of an application fee and a licence fee. Licence fees vary depending on the length of the licence.

An approved tester’s authority issued by the Department consists of:

• a title/cover page
• a Schedule which as a minimum describes the type of prescribed radiation source for which the holder has been authorised to test. The Schedule contains the conditions which have been placed on the approval.

There are prerequisites for prospective approved testers.

How do I apply to become an approved tester?

You need to complete an application form and forward the prescribed fee to the department. Most applications are assessed by the department and a decision made on issue of a licence within approximately 2 weeks of lodgement. You will be mailed an invoice once your application has been assessed. You must pay this invoice, and once the final approval has been given, you will be sent a Certificate. Until you receive this certificate you are not authorised. It is an offence against the Radiation Act for an approved tester to test a prescribed radiation source and issue a certificate of compliance for a type of source without authorisation.

Variations to an existing approval

From time to time an approved tester may wish to make changes to their authority to vary the types of radiation sources which they wish to be authorised to test. In these cases the authority holder must apply to the department for a variation to the approval. A prescribed fee must be paid at the time that the application is lodged.

Most applications are assessed by the department and a decision made on issue of an authority in approximately 2 weeks of lodgement.

The authority must be varied by the Department before the holder can commence testing the sources. This means that for example it is an offence against the Radiation Act for an approved tester to test a prescribed radiation source and issue a certificate of compliance for a type of source which is not authorised by their authority.
