Backgound to the LegislationPage contents: Overview | Download documents OverviewThe Public Health Group, Department of Human Services conducted a review of the following Victorian legislation regulating radiation safety: the Health Act 1958 and the Health (Radiation Safety) Regulations 1994. A discussion paper was prepared to consider recent national and international developments in this area and to canvass options for reform. Written submissions were invited from health and industry professionals, organisations and the public in response to the discussion paper. Submissions were due by 2 March 2004. Following consideration of the submissions and the National Directory for Radiation Protection (Edition 1.0, August 2004), the Radiation Bill 2005 was developed and was introduced into Parliament on 9 August 2005. The Bill was passed by Parliament and received the Royal Assent on 20 September 2005. The Act came into force on 1 September 2007 together with the Radiation Regulations that were developed subsequently. A Regulatory Impact Statement was been prepared in connection with the Radiation Regulations 2007. Submissions closed on the 7 August 2007. Download documents
