The HHISS is managed by the Health Intelligence Unit , Prevention and Population Health Branch, Department of Health. The report below summarises some of the key learnings from the first two years of surveillance in Victoria.

January 2009 Heatwave in Victoria: an Assessment of Health ImpactsThe report by the Office of the Chief Health Officer concluded that there were 374 additional deaths during the January 2009 heatwave. During this time, Victoria experienced an unprecedented statewide heatwave, with Melbourne experiencing three consecutive days of temperatures above 43oC and little overnight relief. Residential aged care services heatwave ready resource, 2010This resource has been developed to support residential aged care service providers put heatwave plans in place. It includes a specific checklist that can be used to assist with preparations for hot summer weather, and templates of heatwave-related health information that can be made available to staff, residents and their families.
