Food safety

Page contents: Food Safety and Emergency Power Failure | Emergency Power Failure Food Storage Checklist | Emergency Catering Checklists | Donating food to emergency services | Drinking water quality | Download documents

Disruptions to power supply are often associated with bushfires, heatwaves or other extreme weather events which can result in risks to food safety. Similarly, those who are involved with catering during such emergencies need to ensure that the food they make is as safe as possible.

The following information has been prepared to assist with minimising risks to food safety at such times:

Food Safety and Emergency Power Failure: What do I need to keep food safe?

The most important thing is to try to keep cold and frozen food cold. If food is still cold to touch, less than 5°C, it is safe to use.

Donating food to emergency services

Individuals who wish to donate food to emergency services, such as fire fighters during bush fires and other natural disasters, should only donate food that cannot cause food poisoning. Foods requiring refrigeration are not suitable for donation.

It is vital that emergency workers remain healthy and therefore risks cannot be taken with food that is provided for them to eat while they are attending to emergency situations.

The Emergency Service will decide what donated food they will accept.

Drinking water quality

Emergencies such as bushfires sometimes impact on drinking water supply or quality.

In all cases, further information can be obtained from the relevant water authority.
