CHAD Nurses Program

10 full time Custodial, Health Alcohol, & Drug (CHAD) nurses jointly funded by Victoria Police and Department of Human Services (DHS) located within selected Category ‘A’ watch houses.

Target group

Offenders held in police custody who have a demonstrable drug problem and who require drug treatment/withdrawal or substitute pharmacotherapy services whilst they are in detention.

Key service requirements

  • Provide timely and accessible health services to people in police custody with specific emphasis on responses to identified A&D related problems

  • Increase quality A&D and healthcare service outcomes to people in police custody

  • Provide and improvement of linkages between health and A&D services to meet the needs of people in police cells after release to the community

  • Provide assistance to police in managing the alcohol, drug and health related problems of people in police custody

  • Provide appropriate pharmacotherapy to those in police custody
