Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) workers

Page content: Target group | Key service requirements | More information

The objectives of this service are to identify clients with an ABI already in the drug treatment system; facilitate access for clients with ABI in need of treatment; keep clients with ABI in the service system by introducing appropriate models of treatment to alcohol and drug workers; and to scope the numbers of clients with a dual disability receiving treatment in the A&D treatment system.

Target group

People with an ABI who are already in the alcohol and drug service system.

Key service requirements

  • To provide direct A&D counselling to a small number of ABI clients who have alcohol and drug issues.

  • To provide secondary consultation to workers in the ABI field on drug and alcohol issues.

  • To create links and relationships between ABI and A&D services (including share care protocols).

  • To assist A&D workers with history taking, devising, conducting and evaluating appropriate treatment for alcohol and drug issues for people with ABI (as part of secondary consultation).

  • To advocate on behalf of clients, families and ABI services for access to and treatment in alcohol and drug agencies.

  • To encourage A&D workers to attend scheduled ABI training and professional development activities.
