Juvenile Justice Pathways to Alcohol & Drug Treatment

The Juvenile Justice (JJ) Juvenile Justice mission is to provide case managed services for statutory clients on juvenile justice community-based and custodial court orders, as well as young people on remand.

Work on The Juvenile Justice Drug Policy and Strategy, revealed a number of barriers to consistent service delivery of alcohol and drug treatment to Juvenile Justice clients. It was recommended that a joint project between DTS Drug Treatment Services and Juvenile Justice commence to review and redesign the mechanisms for Juvenile Justice clients moving through drug treatment.

In December 2003 a number of representatives from Juvenile Justice, Drugs Policy and Services and AOD treatment providers were brought together to participate in a workshop aimed at reviewing and modifying the existing model to facilitate timely access to treatment for young people in contact with Juvenile Justice.

Arising from the workshop was the proposal of two models have been developed, one specifically for Juvenile Justice clients in a custodialy setting and another for Juvenile Justice clients in a community setting.
