Alcohol and parents< back to contents | next page> Standard DrinksIn 2009, the National Health and Medical Research Council released the Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol, which are based on the concept of a standard drink. According to these guidelines, one standard drink contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. These guidelines were developed to provide people with an understanding of alcohol and the risks associated with different levels of consumption. The guidelines were written for the whole population as well as for particular groups, such as young people under the age of 18 years.
Other drinks will vary in their strength of alcohol and will therefore be equal to more or less than a standard drink.
