The Victorian Quality Council (VQC) and Chief Psychiatrist’s Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) have formed a partnership to support the development and implementation of the Creating Safety: Addressing Seclusion Practices project to enable clinicians to apply best available evidence to clinical practice.

The project aims to strengthen and support safety in adult acute mental health inpatient units and to minimise wherever possible, the frequency and duration of the use of seclusion.

The project has been designed along two concurrent streams:

1. The development and implementation of a training and education curriculum to promote clinical best practice.
2. Supporting six health services to promote seclusion best practice in adult acute mental health inpatient units.

What’s New

April 2009

The Creating Safety project has concluded and a report of project learnings is under development. The report will be available in December 2009. Additional resources and tools will also be available on this website to assist Victorian mental health services seeking to reduce the use of restraint and seclusion.

Health Service Projects

Following an expression of interest process, six Victorian Acute Mental Health Inpatient units have been selected to participate in the Creating Safety: Addressing seclusion practices project.

All sites have now commenced the project and external expert facilitators are supporting the development of action plans to improve local seclusion practice.
