General Practice
Below is a list of peak bodies and professional organisations that provide
a range of support services for general practice, both in Victorian and
nationally.
General Practice Victoria
General Practice Victoria is the peak body for Divisions in Victoria.
The Divisions program aims to improve health outcomes for patients by encouraging
GPs to work together and link with other primary care providers to improve
the quality of health care service delivery at the local level. As a peak
body, GPDV take an advocacy and representation role for Divisions. Locally
Divisions can provide comprehensive professional development opportunities
and support for GPs and general practice staff to have input to local,
regional and statewide health service developments through representation

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
(RACGP)
The mission of the RACGP is to improve health and wellbeing for all Australians by supporting general practitioners, registrars and medical students by assessing doctors skills and knowledge, supplying ongoing professional development activities, developing resources and guidelines, helping general practitioners with issues that affect their practice and development standards that general practices use as part of the accreditation processes.
The "RACGP Member Guide" outlines the services provided by the
RACGP and how to become a member. This guide may be obtained from the RACGP
website or by contacting RACGP directly.
Australian
Medical Association (Victoria) Limited (AMA Victoria)
The AMA (Victoria) exists to:
- Provide services, advice, representation and professional support to its members
- Improve health services and the health of Victorians
Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria (RWAV)
RWAV was established in 1998 to overcome the shortage of rural doctors and improve access to medical services for rural Victorians. Priorities include recruitment of rural doctors including specialist outreach services, supporting doctors who have been recruited and their families, and providing ongoing support as long as they remain in rural practice. This includes professional development programs and grants, locum support, marketing of rural general practice, workforce planning and research.
Rural Doctors Association of Victoria
RDAV represents the breadth of Victorian rural doctors: specialist and generalist,
public and private, procedural and non-procedural, Australian trained and

Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM)
ACRRM aims to support and represent the rural medical profession to improve health services for rural and remote communities. We believe the key to achieving this is training skilled, caring and well-prepared doctors and allied health professionals.

Practice nurses
Australian Practice Nurses Association
The Australian Practice Nurses Association is a professional association run
by practice nurses for practice nurses. It provides representation, support
and networking for practice nurses at national, state and local levels.
Divisions of General Practice
Your local Divisions of General practice can provide information on recruitment
and retention of nurses for general practice, as well as facilitation of
professional development and networking for local nurses. To find your local

Support for employing Practice Nurses
Practice Management
A publication "Private Practice Manual" is available for purchase
for both members and non members from the Australian
Medical Association (AMA)
web site.
The Australian Association
of Practice Management VIC.
This member-based professional organisation:

practice managers and the profession of practice management throughout
the healthcare industry
- Promotes professional development and the
code of ethics through leadership and education
- Provides specialised
services and networks to support quality practice management.
Receptionists
Medical receptionists play a crucial role in any practice, and the
RACGP has produced a number of resources to support them in their professional
development. These resources are available at The
