*NEW* The Department has become aware that the Commonwealth may discontinue the Medicare dental items detailed in the attachments below. Community Health Services should check this website at regular intervals for updates on these items, or check the Commonwealth site.

Overview

Note that MBS allied and dental health services can only be provided to clients on an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) care plan.  Therefore, this section must be read in conjunction with the Care Planning and Case Conferencing section, which outlines EPC care plans.

Primary Health Branch funds client access to allied and dental health services through Community Health, as outlined in Community Health Services – Creating a Healthier Victoria and Improving Victoria’s Oral Health.

The Medicare Benefits Schedule funds or subsidises client access to private allied and dental health services for clients on a multidisciplinary Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) care plan, which is coordinated by the client's GP and which may involve the community health sector in a partnership approach to care. Note that only certain types of client are eligible for multidisciplinary EPC care plans and access to MBS-rebateable allied and dental health.

Clients who are permanent residents of an aged care facility are managed under an EPC plan if their GP has contributed to or reviewed a multidisciplinary care plan prepared for them by the aged care facility (item 731).”

Clients are being managed under an EPC plan if their GP has prepared and billed the following MBS Chronic Disease Management items in the previous two years:

  1. a GP Management Plan - item 721 (or review item 725); AND
  2. a Team Care Arrangements - item 723 (or review item 727)

Clients who are permanent residents of an aged care facility are managed under an EPC plan if their GP has contributed to or reviewed a multidisciplinary care plan prepared for them by the aged care facility (item 731).

The number of EPC care plan items being prepared by Victorian GPs, and thus the number of clients with one or more chronic disease/s who are also eligible for MBS-rebateable allied and dental health services, is increasing:
