General resources
The Ottawa Charter (1986) defines health promotion as:
"…the process of enabling people to increase control over,
and to improve, their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental
and social wellbeing, an individual or group must be able to identify and
to realise aspirations, to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the
environment. Health is, therefore, seen as a resource for everyday life,
not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasising social
and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. Therefore, health
promotion is not just the responsibility of the health sector, but goes
beyond healthy lifestyles to wellbeing."
In Victoria, the term ‘integrated health promotion’ refers
to agencies and organisations from a wide range of sectors and communities
in a catchment working in a collaborative manner using a mix of health promotion
interventions and capacity building strategies to address priority health
and wellbeing issues.
Population Health is an approach to health that aims to improve the health
of the entire population and to reduce health inequalities among population
groups. In order to reach these objectives population health looks and acts
upon the broad range of factors and conditions that determine health.
There are a significant number of web sites available to support general
practice in the develop of health promotion programs, below is a sample of
these.
