Accreditation
Accreditation is a tool to measure ongoing practice and business development
as well as providing enhanced patient care, increased professional satisfaction
and risk management.
General Practice accreditation is a means of measuring the quality of a
General Practice and is based on the RACGP Standards for General Practice
(2nd Edition). A copy of the standards can be obtained from The Royal Australian
College of General Practitioners website.
Accreditation must be carried out with either one of the two private accreditation
companies and the cost is generally based on GP service EFT.
The AMA Victoria website (members
only access) has a variety of resources which may assist practices who are
going through accreditation.
In addition, your local Division of General Practice can be of assistance
throughout accreditation. Find your local Division of General Practice at
the General Practice Divisions - Victoria website.

Privacy and Medical Record Management
The Department of Human Services has a link to many useful sites.
In addition, a DIY Privacy for Primary Care Agencies kit has been developed
by three PCPs in the Western Metropolitan Region and can be found on the
Primary Care Partnerships website.
"Application of privacy laws to medical records in Victoria" as

"Code of Practice for the Management of Health Information in General
Practice" is available from the Royal

Information on drug storage requirements for health professionals can be

Sterilisation and Disinfection
"Infection control in the health care setting – guidelines for
the prevention of the transmission of infectious diseases" National
health and Medical Research Council (2002) is available from the Department
of Health and Ageing website.
"Sterilisation and Disinfection Guidelines for General Practice
(3rd Edition)" is now available at Royal
Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Physical design
The AGPAL Accreditation website has several useful fact sheets which contain
information about practice design, designing a patient friendly practice,
planning a practice and practice signage. These can be found on the AGPAL
Accreditation website.

Medicine and the law
Visit the Australian Medical
Association Victoria website for information on areas such as whistleblowers
protection, mandatory reporting, and professional indemnity.
Security
The Victorian Police Department offer a security audit service by specifically
trained crime prevention officers. There are 23 crime prevention officers
located within 5 regions across the state.
This is available for a variety
of health services from major hospitals to smaller 2 doctor practices. The
assessment is free and includes a site visit, discussion on preventative
measures and staff training.
