Communication

Communication lies at the heart of good medical practice and is central to all activity focused on reducing the risks associated with healthcare. The Coronial Communiqué is one of the many projects initiated by the Clinical Liaison Service to increase the channels of communication between the health and coronial sector.

A recent visitor from Japan

The Coronial Services Centre recently hosted a visitor from Japan. Dr. Kiyotaka Segami is the Director of Public Health Administration and Policy for the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Dr. Segami’s visit was prompted by the recent launch of the Clinical Liaison Service’s newsletter: Coronial Communiqué. There has been a growing awareness within Japan about patient safety and this is an issue at which his Office is looking. Dr. Segami is also working to improve the way in which the Japanese investigate deaths, and he has much admiration for the Victorian model.

His visit involved meetings with: the Clinical Liaison Service, the Director of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (Professor Stephen Cordner) and the Monash University National Centre for Coronial Information (MUNCCI). He also attended an inquest and met with the State Coroner (Mr. Graeme Johnstone).

Coronial Communiqué (Latest Edition online - Opens in a new window)

The Coronial Communiqué highlights selected cases that have been reported to the State Coroner's Office and are of interest to healthcare professionals. The aims of the Communiqué are:

•  To improve the awareness of clinicians and those in positions of governance about adverse events resulting from systems failures. Lessons from past cases can then be applied to their own institutions.

•  To improve healthcare organisations' understanding of the coronial system and the work performed by the Clinical Liaison Service.

The Communiqué is produced quarterly and distributed electronically to subscribers who have registered their interest with the publication team. Subscription is free of charge and can be sent to your preferred email address. To be added to our distribution list, please email: zoed@vifm.org. You can also access the Coronial Communique on line.
