Limited adverse occurrence screening (LAOS) program

What is the LAOS program?

The Limited Adverse Occurrence Screening (LAOS) program supports clinical risk management (CRM) in smaller rural health services.

The LAOS program is a way of identifying local system problems in clinical care, and has been shown to be a valuable mechanism to engage physicians in the process of CRM.

Adverse events are analysed, and recommendations aimed at preventing these events from recurring are made and implemented.

Screening & reporting requirements

In-scope regional health services should review all inpatient medical records for the presence of general patient outcomes in accordance with the minimum pre-determined selection criteria.

Health services may use additional selection criteria that are suitable for the range of services they provide.

Participating health services are to provide information regarding the screening criteria, process and outcomes as part of their annual Quality of Care Report.

Six lead divisions of general practice, with General Practice Victoria, deliver the LAOS program across rural Victoria.

More information regarding the LAOS program, its coordination, and the screening and reporting requirements are outlined in the attached information sheet:
