Drug Information

Australian Prescription Products Guide
Contains prescription product information, consumer medicine and reference information for all prescription items in Australia, incorporating Australian approved food additive numbers, patient support organisations, and drug combinations. You will need to register to use this free service. The information is updated monthly.

Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits
Provides information on the arrangements for the prescribing and supply of pharmaceutical benefits under the commonwealth government's Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

National Prescribing Service
A non-profit organisation, independent of government and the pharmaceutical industry, with a goal to improve the health of Australians through quality prescribing of medicines by providing access to independent, balanced, critically appraised information on medicines to prescribers and consumers.


Evidence Based Practice Reviews

Cochrane Library
Prepared by the Cochrane Collaboration, which is an international network of individuals and institutions committed to preparing, maintaining and disseminating reliable up-to-date information about the effectiveness of health care. The Cochrane Library contains eight databases, including the following:

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - regularly updated summaries of the best available evidence
The Database of Abstract of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) - other published reviews prepared by people outside of the Cochrane Collaboration
The U.K. National Health Service (NHS) Economic Evaluation Database - comprises international economic evaluations of health care interventions, providing decision makers with information on costs of interventions alongside information on effectiveness.

National Access to the Cochrane Library is funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia.

Bandolier
A website about health care treatments and diseases. Bandolier distils information from secondary reviews of primary trials and makes it comprehensible. Information is available via the online journal or through the knowledge resource area by topic.


Handbooks

Asthma Adherence - A Guide for Health Professionals
In developing this practical guide, the National Asthma Council (NAC) aims to assist those involved in asthma care to understand more about adherence and the factors affecting it, both as a patient issue and an asthma management issue.

Asthma Management Handbook (2002)
A practical guide to practising clinicians, community pharmacists and other health professionals to assist them in their management of people with asthma developed by the National Asthma Council, Australia. Its recommendations are based on the most up-to-date evidence available, through the 1999 Evidence-Based Review of the Australian Six Step Asthma Management Plan (Coughlan J, Wilson A, Gibson P, NSW Health 2000), subsequent Cochrane reviews and other meta-analyses. Where evidence is lacking, the consensus opinion of Australian experts has been incorporated.

The Australian Immunisation Handbook - 8th Edition
The Handbook provides practitioners with clear guidance on vaccination, including vaccination procedures, the Australian Standard Vaccination Schedule, catch-up vaccination, vaccination for special risk groups and reporting requirements for adverse events and the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register. An evidence-based tool that provides information on the initial assessment and management of 94 common conditions encountered during the early newborn period.

Royal Children's Hospital Paediatric Clinical Practice Guidelines
An 'A to Z' list of common paediatric presentations, the Royal Children's Hospital Clinical practice guidelines have been developed from knowledge of important paediatric conditions and conditions flagged by problems with individual cases or Adverse Events Review.

The Merck Manual of Geriatrics
An interdisciplinary textbook that provides a broad base of information of clinical relevance to geriatric care--everything from internal medicine to pharmacology and dermatology to rehabilitation medicine and psychiatry.

The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy (17th Edition)
The Merck Manual covers all the subjects expected in a textbook of internal medicine as well as detailed information on paediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics, gynaecology, dermatology, pharmacology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, and a number of special subjects.
