Maternity and Newborn

The Maternity and Newborn Clinical Network (MNCN) was established in August 2007 following a state-wide forum for people interested in perinatal care (consumers, clinicians, hospital administrators). Concepts agreed at the inaugural forum shaped the development of the MNCN. A leadership group was established and agreed a work-plan. The MNCN is supported by a team with experience in perinatal care to assist participant health services.

The objective of the Maternity and Newborn Clinical network is to:

  • Improve perinatal outcomes by reducing unnecessary variation in clinical practice.

The MNCN provides a mechanism for clinicians to inform policy on maternity and newborn service delivery.

The MNCN works closely with areas of the DHS that develop relevant policy including maternity (Programs Branch), neonatal care (Access and Metropolitan Performance), Nurse Policy Branch, and Service and Workforce Planning.

Three key result areas (KRAs) were identified following the August 2007 forum:

  • KRA 1: Establish the Network as an efficient and effective partnership of maternity and newborn service providers

  • KRA 2: Develop a planning base for sustainable system improvement

  • KRA 3: Utilise existing information systems to inform practice improvement
Maternity and Newborn Clinical Network Facilitators

In order to deliver on these objectives two Maternity and Newborn Clinical Facilitators have been seconded to the department from across Victoria to support local project activities.

The Maternity and Newborn Clinical Facilitators are placed in the following areas:

Sue Sinni – Team Leader, Southern Health

Debbie Rogers – Mercy Hospital for Women
