Clinical Networks and the role of ICT forum July 2008On 24-25 July 2008, the Department of Human Services hosted a forum on the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Clinical Networks at the Centre for Health Innovation, Alfred Precinct. ICT support for clinical networks was initially raised in the context of Victoria’s cancer service reforms, particularly around how key reform aspects such as care coordination and multidisciplinary care could be supported with appropriate communication technologies. The issue gained further impetus in 2007 with the development of a formal state clinical network program, and the commencement and the planning of the next Whole-of-Health ICT strategy in the Department of Human Services. The forum was conceived as an important opportunity to discuss the challenges and possibilities for ICT in supporting Clinical Networks, and to view a range of possible solutions, including those that have currently been implemented to support networked approaches to health care. Importantly, the forum was timed to enable outcomes to be fed into the development of the business case for the next state Whole-of-Health ICT strategy 2009-2013, due October 2008.
