Update on paediatric clinical care

Enhancing the use of best practice in caring patients for patients in emergency departments (ED) is a priority area for the Emergency Care Improvement and Innovation Clinical Network (ECIICN). Collaborating with the Paediatric Clinical Network (PCN), the ECIICN focused on best practice in caring for the young at its first update on paediatric clinical care forum on 16 June 2011 in Melbourne.

Almost 200 clinicians from EDs and paediatric wards across the state attended the forum, illustrating the strong interest of health service clinicians in keeping abreast of the latest developments in paediatric care and hearing about best practice.

The forum program includes presentations from experts on child and family centred care, acute assessment of a child, pain management, the latest evidence in paediatric resuscitation guidelines and paediatric procedural sedation. In the afternoon experts presented the latest evidence in fracture management, gastroenteritis, fever, minor head injury and acute asthma.

The forum was a stimulating day for attendees, providing them with new knowledge and practical examples at information booths on paediatric specific observations charts, paediatric resuscitation, child and family centred care, including distraction boxes and music therapy, and nitrous oxide set up.
