Memorandum of UnderstandingThe Memorandum of understanding between the Chief Psychiatrist and the Public Advocate, Responsibilities and roles when working with people with mental illness - September 2006 (PDF file 145KB) is for mental health professionals and guardians who sometimes make decisions on behalf of persons who are unable to consent to treatment because of mental illness or disability. The aim of the memorandum is to provide guidance to mental health professionals and guardians where there is overlap between respective roles and responsibilities under both the Guardianship and Administration Act 1986 (Vic) and the Mental Health Act 1986 (Vic). It is hoped that this memorandum will prove a useful resource and enhance cooperative working relationships between mental health professionals and guardians.
