Victorian Cremation Industry Viability

This review was commissioned to provide the department with information about the viability of the Cremation industry in Victorian

This review had two broad aims:

  • Investigate the economic returns from Victorian crematoria and report on the current financial state of the Victorian ‘cremation industry.
  • Provide a clear basis for the Department to evaluate proposals from Cemetery Trusts to establish new crematorium facilities.

The department received the MJA report in late 2004. Its release was delayed pending the outcome of Auditor General's investigations into the cemetery and crematoria industry. One of key recommendations of the MJA report is that the department commence a review of the current structural arrangement of the industry related to cremation, particular with reference to its financial impacts. This report was considered by the Auditor General's in their review.

The MJA report has been released to the industry for information, the moratorium on the construction of new crematoria will continued and the recommendation regarding the review of the structural arrangement for funding the industry be considered along with the Auditor Generals key policy recommendations.
