Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer 2003 - 2007

The Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer, chaired by Professor Richard Smallwood, was established to provide strategic leadership and advice on the implementation of the Victorian Government's cancer reform agenda. Key responsibilities include: advising on improving patient care; forging links with statewide and national bodies; coordination of cancer research and services; strengthening the collection of cancer data and information.

The Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer has three working groups which focus on the areas of clinical services, cancer research and data and information.

Terms of Reference

The Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer plays an important role in working to reduce the burden of cancer for the people of Victoria through enhancing clinical practice and research.

The Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer provides advice to the Minister for Health on the implementation and evaluation of the Government's directions for cancer services reform. Advice is also provided to the Minister for Health and the Minister for Innovation on matters relating to cancer research.

Objectives

Services focus

  • To collaborate with stakeholders in determining priorities for strategic directions for cancer services in Victoria
  • To advise on the implementation of the Cancer Services Framework
  • To advise on the development and implementation of service improvement programs to enhance patient care

Research focus

  • To advise on better integration, coordination and development of cancer research in Victoria
  • To promote communication between research centres and health services to facilitate the translation of cancer research into clinical practice
  • To consider the options for a Comprehensive Cancer Centre for Victoria

Data/information management focus

  • To advise on and support the development of cancer data collections to facilitate quality improvement, performance monitoring and reporting for clinical practice and research

National initiatives

  • To facilitate collaboration and coordination between Government and key cancer National bodies
