Lymphoedema

'Lymphoedema' is swelling in an area of the body due to the lymphatic vessels being blocked. It can occur as a result of breast cancer or can be caused by previous surgery or radiotherapy to the area.

BreastCare Victoria and the North Eastern BSEP reviewed lymphoedema services across Victoria. The purpose of the review was to map existing service provision, identify gaps in services and make recommendations about future directions.

Two of BreastCare Victoria's BSEPs developed services for women with lymphoedema - Southern BSEP and Barwon South Western BSEP. Southern Health in metropolitan Victoria, is now managing a specialist lymphoedema service that emphasises prevention, early detection and self-care. A rural lymphoedema service is now provided in Hamilton, which includes specialist training and appropriate referral networks.
