Breast Care Nurses
The value of the specialist breast care nurse role as part
of the multidisciplinary team in providing quality care for
women has been increasingly recognised nationally and internationally
as part of evidence-based best practice for breast care.
Breast care nurses have been available for over twenty years
in Victoria; however both women's access to a breast care
nurse and the services offered are variable.
In 2000, BreastCare Victoria commissioned the Victorian Centre
for Nursing Practice Research, School of Post-graduate Nursing,
University of Melbourne, to undertake a study to describe
the current availability of breast care nurses, their scope
of practice and factors influencing practice.
The study, titled BreastCare
Nurses in Victoria: A Workforce Study of Practice and Factors
Influencing Practice (PDF file 183KB) captures a comprehensive
view of Victorian breast care nurses and provides a benchmark
to assess practice initiatives.
Critical issues identified in the Study include: enhancing
psychosocial assessment; developing clinical pathways; improving
referral to and from breast care nurses; and improving breast
care nurse involvement in the multidisciplinary team.
