Barwon South Western BSEP
Program Overview
The Barwon-South Western region covers an area of 30,000
square kilometres, that extends from Geelong in the east to
the South Australian boarder and as far north as Casterton
and Coleraine. The area has a population of 330,000 and approximately
250 women are diagnosed with breast cancer per annum.
There are five main centres providing care to women diagnosed
with breast cancer. These are Geelong with both public and
private hospitals, Colac with surgical outreach to Terang
and Timboon, Warrnambool with both public and private health
care, Hamilton and Portland.
A member of the executive team of each health service in
the region, as well as senior clinicians and consumers represented
on the Barwon BSEP Co-ordinating Committee. Two Regional Reference
Groups comprising Directors of Nursing, Breast Care/Community
Health Nurses, Clinicians and Consumers, provided clinical
guidance to all projects.
The project team included: a Clinical Coordinator, Project
Manager, Project Officer and Regional Breast Care Nurse.
Program Objectives
The aims of the program in the Barwon-South Western Region
included:
- Engagement of stakeholders to participate in planning
and coordination to improve the care of women with breast
disease in the region.
- All projects based upon best practice guidelines.
- Development of multidisciplinary care for women diagnosed
with breast cancer.
- Examination of the role of the Breast Care Nurse with
improvement in access to and consistency of care provision
region-wide.
- Improvement in information provision.
- Improvement in continuity of care through development
of clinical pathway guidelines and evaluation of a hand
held record.
- Each project developed with a view to long term sustainability.
- Evaluation of each project, with a view to replication
in other cancers and disease processes.
