Welcome
Welcome to the BreastCare Victoria web site. This website
includes information on the BreastCare Victoria Program, an
initiative of the Victorian Government to improve breast services
for women with breast cancer.
The work of BreastCare Victoria was guided by a government
strategy, the Breast Disease
Service Redevelopment Strategy, with a focus on improving
breast services in line with evidence-based best practice.
The BreastCare Victoria Program was overseen by an expert
Advisory Committee and implemented
through a central Coordination Unit.
A major initiative of BreastCare Victoria was the Breast
Services Enhancement Program (BSEP). This quality improvement
program was implemented through nine demonstration models
across Victoria to develop, trial and evaluate best practice
models of service provision.
BreastCare Victoria commissioned a number of statewide
projects to address some of the key issues identified
in the Breast Disease Service Redevelopment Strategy,
including: the provision of breast prosthesis; breast care
nurse workforce; and hospital performance monitoring and reporting.
BreastCare Victoria was also responsible for developing
and implementing the Commonwealth funded Strengthening
Support for Women with Breast Cancer (SSWBC) Program.
SSWBC initiatives built on strategies implemented in rural
and regional Victoria through the BSEP.
Statewide publications and BSEP and SSWBC program reports
are now available on this website under 'Resources
and Publications'.
A forum, titled: Informing cancer
services improvement: lessons from the Breast Services Enhancement
Program in Victoria, was held in July
2004 to mark the ending and celebrate the achievements of
BSEP. A formal evaluation was undertaken and from that a
Learning series was developed to assist anyone involved
in service redevelopment and quality improvement initiatives
to improve clinical outcomes and the consumer experience.
Information regarding current cancer service improvement
initiatives can be found on the Victorian
Government Cancer Initiatives web site.
