Box Hill Hospital Redevelopment Project

New building ‘tops out’

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and the Minister for Health David Davis attended a ‘topping out’ ceremony for the new building, a construction tradition which marks the safe and successful completion of the building’s structure. After 16 months of construction, the building is now at full height, 45 metres.

During the ceremony, held on the roof of the new building, the Premier assisted members of  Baulderstone’s construction crew with a finishing concrete pour for level ten.

The custom of placing a tree at the highest point of the structure to signify good luck was undertaken when the hospital’s west wing was built in 1967 and this tradition was continued with a Wallangara White Gum tree, which will  later be planted in the hospital grounds.

A bigger and better hospital for Box Hill

The new Box Hill Hospital will now be bigger and better thanks to the additional floor which is to be constructed as part of the new clinical services block.

Minister for Health David Davis announced that the redevelopment was on time and on budget, and thanks to substantial savings, will now feature a ninth floor for the same price.

“This mean that all the 200 additional beds planned for Box Hill will be housed under the one roof, delivering more efficient and higher quality services to patients,” Mr Davis said.

Our Vision

As the major referral centre for people living in the eastern region of Melbourne, the redeveloped Box Hill Hospital will be a contemporary facility, attracting the finest staff to deliver best-practice models of care. Eastern Health and the Department of Health’s vision is to create a technologically advanced healthcare facility in Box Hill.

Improving Box Hill Hospital

The Victorian Government has committed $447.5 million dollars for the redevelopment of the hospital which will be completed in 2015. The Department of Health and Eastern Health are working together to deliver this healthcare facility.

The hospital will remain operational throughout the redevelopment and this website aims to keep you up to date with what’s happening with this exciting project.

Artists impression of building at location

A new building (total area over 51,000 square metres) will be built on the site of the car park and former Clive Ward building, next to the existing hospital building. It will be joined to the west wing of the hospital via an atrium and four linkways.

Upon completion of the new block in 2014, some refurbishment of the existing hospital will take place.
