Introduction
The Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice is an online course administered by The University of Melbourne School of Nursing and coordinated by Melbourne Consulting and Custom Programs. The course is delivered under the auspice of the Blood Matters Program, Victoria, a collaboration between the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and The Department of Health. The course is currently offered part-time (2 subjects per semester).
It consists of four subjects:
Semester 1
- Fundamentals in Transfusion Practice
- Quality within Transfusion Practice
Semester 2
- Advanced Concepts in Transfusion Practice
- Transfusion Specialty Practice (Clinical Practice Portfolio)
Upon successful completion the student will obtain a Post Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice from Melbourne University.
The course will cover a variety of topics relating to Transfusion Practice ranging from fundamental concepts through to more advanced theory and quality issues which will assist those working in Transfusion Practice to ensure best practice is maintained. "Class Day" is Thursday so it is important that students allocate time on this day to access and participate in the discussion forum. The course coordinator is online on this day. Submission of work is expected on or by the class day, however it is not required that students be online all day. This 'class day' is the dedicated weekly opportunity to interact with other students and the course coordinator.
Mode of Delivery
The content for the subjects is delivered via web-enabled online learning system. The Transfusion Specialty Practice subject is delivered through the use of a clinical practice portfolio.
Weekly Requirements
Activities / questions and discussion threads will be posted each week and it is expected that students will participate actively in these as a proportion of the overall mark is given to participation and involvement in discussion.
Textbook and book of readings
There is a recommended textbook for this course. In addition, students will receive a compilation of required readings for all three of the theory subjects.
