Peter MacCallum Blood product competency 2007

Aim

On completion of this learning package, the nurse should possess the necessary prerequisite knowledge and skills to transfuse red cells, platelets or clotting factors safely and according to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Policy and Procedure Manual.

This self-directed learning package is accompanied by three competency assessment tools;

  1. Administration of red cells
  2. Administration of platelets
  3. Administration of clotting factors

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this package the learner will be able to demonstrate competency by:

  • Providing appropriate and adequate patient education regarding red cell, platelet or clotting factor administration
  • Assessing the appropriateness of blood component transfusion with reference to the National Health & Medical Research Council (NH&MRC)/Australia and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Demonstrating the correct process for ordering and accessing blood products, platelets or clotting factors
  • Completing the documentation required for blood component ordering, administration and adverse reactions
  • Positively identifying the patient before cross checking products and product administration
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for the use of leucodepletion/filtration, irradiation in the transfusion of red cells and platelets
  • Demonstrate and understanding of the rationale for the use of blood warming and diuretics in the transfusion of red cells
  • Establishing a patient’s cytomegalovirus (CMV) status prior to transfusion and stating the potential clinical consequences of exposure to CMV
  • Demonstrating and understanding of the potential adverse reactions that may occur during the transfusion of red cells, platelets or clotting factors and demonstrating knowledge of the appropriate nursing and medical responses
  • Demonstrating an appreciation of the clinical consequences of platelet refractoriness
