Clinical audit of platelet use in Victorian and Tasmanian hospitals 2007Page content: Overview OverviewPlatelet transfusion is indicated for the prevention and treatment of haemorrhage in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet function defects. Previous studies have shown a wide variation in clinical practice in the transfusion of platelets. We conducted an audit to determine whether current platelet transfusion practice in Victorian and Tasmanian hospitals is consistent with contemporary best practice clinical guidelines. Hospitals with significant routine usage of platelets were invited to contribute data on 30 consecutive platelet transfusion episodes within their institutions. The report provides the data collected for each specific hospital, and makes this available to those organisations. It then presents the overall findings resulting from analysing the data provided by all of the contributing hospitals.
