The three key result areas include:

Key result area 1—Clinical governance

The aim is to:

  • promote the implementation of clinical governance frameworks within Victoria that support delivery of the highest possible standards of clinical transfusion practice within Victorian hospitals.

This area is of work is managed by the Transfusion Clinical Governance group which is chaired by Dr Peter Bradford.

Key result area 2—Blood management

The aims are to:

  • promote best practice for in patient blood management, including implementation of strategies that minimise the need for blood product use and those that help ensure safe and appropriate transfusion practices.
  • derive recommendations for improvements for better, safer transfusion practice from the monitoring of serious transfusion incidents (including adverse events and near misses) during blood and blood product utilisation in Victoria, and to disseminate these to Victorian hospitals and health services.

Two working groups manage this area: Patient Blood Management group and the Serious Transfusion Incident Reporting Expert Group (STIR).

The Patient Blood Management Group is chaired by Dr Helen Savoia.

The STIR expert group is chaired by Dr Erica Wood.

Key result area 3—Communications

The aim is to:

  • share knowledge and promote collaboration with relevant stakeholder groups locally, nationally and internationally for the achievement of better and safer transfusion practice.

The Executive Group oversees this area and is chaired by Associate Professor Larry McNicol.
