Welcome to the webpage of the Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008

The Assisted Reproductive Treatment Act 2008 was passed in the Victorian Parliament on 4 December 2008 and will come into operation on 1 January 2010.

The Act is now available online and can be downloaded from the Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website.

The main purposes of the Act are:

(a) to regulate the use of assisted reproductive treatment and artificial insemination procedures (other than self-insemination);
(b) to regulate access to information about treatment procedures carried out under the Act;
(c) to promote research into the incidence, causes and prevention of infertility;
(d) to make provision with respect to surrogacy arrangements;
(e) to establish the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority;
(f) to provide for the keeping of the Central Register and the Voluntary Register by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages;
(g) to repeal the Infertility Treatment Act 1995;
(h) to amend the Status of Children Act 1974 and the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996 and other Acts consequent on the enactment of the Act.
