About the conferenceThe Department of Human Services, Access and Metropolitan Performance Branch hosted an important two-day conference on 27 and 28 April 2006 to showcase a range of access initiatives. The Better State of Hospitals Conference attracted managers, clinicians and policy makers of all disciplines working at various levels of public sector health care in Victoria.Conference themes
Keynote speakers:"Victoria’s reforms and future challenges" Professor Stephen Duckett Stephen Duckett heads the Reform Team for Queensland Health. He was previously Secretary of the Federal Department of Health and Ageing (1994–96) and held several leadership positions in the Victorian Health Department. From 1996–2005 he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Health Sciences and Professor of Health Policy at LaTrobe University and as Chair of Bayside Health and the Brotherhood of St Laurence. In 2004, Professor Duckett was recognised by his peers as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and in 2006 was awarded a Doctor of Science by the University of New South Wales for his published work. He is a current Fellow of the Australian College of Health Services Executives and the Australian Institute of Company Directors "Lean thinking – is this another fad diet?’ Workforce redesign, analysing performance and new models of care" Dr David Panter David was educated in England and holds a PHD in Developmental Psychology. He brings a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles with extensive public sector experience in policy development and implementation at national, regional and local levels across the health and local government sectors in the United Kingdom. He has held senior executive and chief executive roles in a number of NHS bodies over 15 years, including the UK’s first Primary Care Trust. Before arriving in Adelaide David was the Chief Executive of Brighton and Hove City Council, overseeing more than 8500 staff and an annual budget of over $1.2b AUD. David is now the Chief Executive of the newly-established Central Northern Adelaide Health Service where he is responsible for operating the health service and leading the health reform process. In May 2005 David was appointed Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Adelaide. "VHSMIC, the Statement of Strategic Intent and current projects of the Ministerial Advisory Committee" Dr Brendan Murphy Dr Brendan Murphy commenced as CEO of Austin Health in January 2005. He held previous posts as Chief Medical Officer, Director of Nephrology and academic physician in nephrology at St Vincent’s Health. He is currently Chair of the Health Service Management Innovation Council and a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He was previously President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology and a Board Member of Kidney Health Australia and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Care in your communityThe official launch of Care in your community preceded the opening of the Better State of Hospitals Conference on Thursday 27 April. Care in your community is an indepth planning framework for integrated ambulatory health care. The framework provides a ten-year vision, backed by specific actions, to effectively deliver person- and family-centred health care in community-based settings in Victoria. |
