Liz Krstevski is the Nurse Unit Manager at Austin Health's Medi-hotel.

Medi-hotels are designed to help people who need to be close to a hospital, but don't necessarily need to stay in a hospital bed. For example, people who are travelling from the country and have appointments at the hospital on consecutive days may not have ready access to transport, or accommodation with friends and family, which can make their stay an expensive one. Medi-hotels offer inexpensive accommodation within the hospital grounds, with a nurse on-call at all times. It even allows for a carer to stay with the patient.

Medi-hotels are just one an example of the new way patients are being cared for in Victoria. Medi-hotel beds can provide a less clinical atmosphere for patients to recover while freeing up beds within the main hospital for patients who really need them. This has a positive effect on both patient recovery and waiting times.

Liz says that "The way we do things is changing, and for me that's fantastic". These changes are happening all across Victoria and are only one part of the State Government's plan for a better health system. A plan that will ensure a healthy future for all Victorians.
