Consistency of Triage in Emergency Departments

Triage is the process by which a patient is briefly assessed upon arrival in the emergency department to determine the urgency of their problem and priority for care. The goals of triage include:

  • Immediate/early patient assessment
  • Reduction in possible harmful delays in the waiting room
  • Control of patient flow
  • Assignment of patients to appropriate areas of care and initiation of diagnostic measures.

The objective of the Consistency of Triage in Victoria's Emergency Departments project is to improve the consistency in application of the National Triage Scale (NTS) across Victorian emergency departments, particularly in the 29 major emergency departments that contribute to the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD). Improving consistency will enable hospitals to better benchmark against their peers while promoting fairness in monitoring hospital performance.

The Consistency of Triage in Victoria's Emergency Departments project is divided into five stages:

  1. Baseline information collection, analysis and reporting
  2. Analysis of the tools that guide the triage decision making process and possible development of an alternative tool
  3. Development of triage training approach and package suitable for statewide use
  4. Development of a triage quality assurance approach
  5. Development of a methodology to evaluate the project.
