Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2002). Australian hospital statistics 2000-01. Canberra, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. http://www.aihw.gov.au/publications/hse/ahs00-01/index.html
Australian Hospital Statistics 2000-01 presents detailed information on the characteristics and hospital care of the six million people admitted to public and private hospitals, including their age, sex, diagnoses and the procedures they underwent. For the first time, waiting times for patients admitted for elective surgery in public hospitals are presented in this report. Detailed information is presented by the specialty of the surgeon who was to perform the elective surgery and for selected procedures for which patients were waiting. Information on Australia's hospitals includes the number of hospitals and hospital beds, and key statistics on the resources, expenditure and revenue of public hospitals and on the services they provide. Data on a range of hospital performance indicators are also reported using the Health Performance Committee's framework.

Extract from Executive Summary: Previous reports on 'performance' have focused on health and health service indicators, with many of the indicators relating to institutional care and acute care settings. As part of its Terms of Reference, the NHPC agreed to develop a broad national health performance framework that could be used as the basis for its annual report to Ministers. Results of this work were reflected in the publication in August 2001 of the National Health Performance Framework Report, which outlined the new framework. This 2001 Report is the first report to Ministers on health sector performance based on the new framework. It is a significant milestone as it includes not only indicators relating to health sector performance but also health status and health determinants.
http://www.health.qld.gov.au/nathlthrpt/11381_doc.pdf Extract from Executive Summary: The National Health Performance Committee (NHPC) was formed at the request of the Australian Health Ministers' Conference to develop and maintain a national performance measurement framework for the health system. The NHPC is also required to establish and maintain appropriate national performance indicators within the national performance measurement framework for the purpose of its reporting. In February 2000, the NHPC embarked on the development of a new Australian health performance framework. A Discussion Paper was disseminated widely for comment to jurisdictions, government and non-government providers, and consumers in the health system. An NHPC workshop to refine and improve the proposed framework was held in July 2000. The new framework has been adapted from the Canadian Institute for Health Information framework as part of the Canadian Roadmap Initiative that was established in 1999. |
