Emergency Breakthrough CollaborationThe Victorian Emergency Breakthrough Collaborative was a 10 month project focusing on reducing waiting times and delays, and improving patient satisfaction in emergency departments. The Breakthrough Collaborative initiative was being implemented under the executive sponsorship of the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Using the methodology developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in the United States in 1995, the project brought together 19 hospitals (18 Victorian and 1 from the ACT) that share a commitment to making major, rapid changes that produce breakthrough results. The Breakthrough Collaborative provided the clinical, technical and social support for health care organisations to mobilise resources to make positive changes and generate momentum for continuing the improvement process beyond the Breakthrough Collaborative.
