Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Working Party

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality, illness and disability, and the third leading cause of burden of disease in Australia today.

Increasing evidence supports adoption of a more holistic and integrated approach for patients with chronic disease such as disease management programs.

The key focus of the COPD Working Party is to establish best practice principles for managing patients with COPD that:

  • Promote evidence-based practice,
  • Span the continuum of care,
  • Promote service coordination and efficiency in service delivery,
  • Are patient centric,
  • Demonstrate improvement in patient outcome and quality of life, and
  • Minimise exacerbations of the condition and reduce emergency presentations to hospital.
