It's a Long Day On Your Own: Exploring & Addressing the Health Impacts of Grandmothering in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Communities

This Report describes the process, findings and outcomes of the Health Impacts of Grandmothering Project, a joint initiative of Women's Health In the North (WHIN) and Victorian Co-operative on Children's Services for Ethnic Groups (VICSEG), with contributions from the Macedonian Settlement Program of the Community Information Whittlesea. The Project focused on the experiences and issues of the grandmothers from two cultural groups (Arabic speaking and mainland Chinese speaking backgrounds) who have substantial childcare responsibilities for their grandchildren. The research objectives were to develop knowledge about how the lives of grandmothers from culturally diverse backgrounds were affected by the provision of childcare, the issues they faced and the ways in which they could be supported. The report aims to celebrate the contributions of grandmothers, to gain public recognition for this contribution, and to develop strategies that would increase their access to social, recreational and educational opportunities.
