Dementia Framework for Victoria, 2005 and Beyond
Consultation Paper, December 2004

Page content: Introduction | Download document

Introduction

Since the year 2000, much has been achieved in dementia policy and practice in Victoria. The current dementia framework “Dementia – Care and Support in Victoria 2000 and Beyond” is reaching its conclusion. The Department of Human Services (DHS) Aged Care Branch is considering directions for future dementia policy and practice in Victoria. The Victorian Dementia Reference Group and Working Party, auspiced by the Aged Care Branch, have suggested four main areas and proposed strategies, for dementia care and support in Victoria from 2005. The four areas are:

A. Risk Reduction and Prevention of Dementia - Healthy and active living
B. Early Stages on the Dementia Pathway
C. Middle Stages on the Dementia Pathway
D. Late Stages on the Dementia Pathway

Proposed strategies cover a range of issues, including: promoting positive and healthy ageing, education and information about dementia, service development, support for people with dementia and their families and carers, and respite and residential care. As part of the process in considering future directions, a Consultation Paper has been developed to stimulate thoughts and contributions on what the future dementia framework for Victoria should be, from 2005 and beyond. The Consultation Paper has built in questions, repeated in a questionnaire later in the paper, to stimulate thoughts, and to respond to the strategies proposed.

There may be opportunities for organisations to agenda the Consultation Paper at a meeting of relevant and interested stakeholders. Otherwise, individuals may wish to distribute it to relevant stakeholders. Some organisations will be able to seek input from people with dementia, which would be appreciated.

Stakeholders may not have views on all questions. Please complete the questions you are able, or most wish to comment on, in the Questionnaire. Input is sought before Friday 25 February 2005. The Consultation Paper explains how to return questionnaires by 25 February. Any queries can be directed to Diane Calleja, Dementia Portfolio and Support for Carers, Aged Care Branch, DHS on (61 3) 9616 7727.
