Getting started< back to contents | next page> If you are starting from an inactive level, the key is to start off slowly and build up at your own pace. For people who want a higher level of fitness, experts recommend participating in more vigorous, physical activity on a regular basis. If you are male and over 40 or female and over 50 you should seek your doctors advice before doing vigorous activity. Moderate activity, in most cases, poses little health risk. However, if you have been fairly inactive or are recovering from a significant illness or have a major health problem, it's a good idea to discuss suitable activities with your local doctor first. Talk to your doctor especially if you've had chest pains, have a serious weight problem, high blood pressure or diabetes. Your doctor can also provide support, encouragement and motivation to help you maintain an active lifestyle. Think of physical activity not only as an opportunity to improve your energy levels, your sense of balance and general well-being but, just as importantly, as a way to have fun and be with other people.
