An introduction to active living

< back to contents | next page>

Most of us know we should be more active to get the most out of our life. Some of us have already started and are experiencing the lifestyle and health benefits of regular physical activity. Some of us may be contemplating starting and need support and encouragement to become more active in our daily lives.

The good news is you can make physical activity a part of your life at any age. Making a habit of getting active, in whatever way that suits you, will improve your health and sense of well-being no matter how long you have been inactive.

Even the most inactive or sedentary person can gain significant health and lifestyle benefits if they become even a little more active. So its never too late to get started!

  • Think of movement as an enjoyable opportunity, not an inconvenience
  • Be active every day in as many ways as you can
  • Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, on most, preferably all, days
  • If you can, also enjoy some regular, more vigorous exercise for extra health and fitness. Source: National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians

Some of the benefits of an active lifestyle include:

  • Extra energy - using more energy throughout your day actually gives you extra energy not less to perform daily tasks
  • A sounder sleep
  • Having fun, maintaining and making new friends
  • Reducing stress levels and anxiety
  • A more positive and balanced outlook on life
  • Improved concentration
  • Enhanced self confidence and independence
  • Reducing the risk of falls
  • Stronger bones
  • Enhanced muscle strength, balance and flexibility
  • Improved posture and body shape
  • Improved digestion and bowel movement
  • Improved immune function
  • Improved breathing

An active lifestyle can also lower the risks of problems like:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • diabetes
  • osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • and some cancers
